Commanding Officer, 2d Marine Regiment Colonel Brian P. Coyne
Colonel Coyne is a native of Long Island, New York.  He was commissioned in 1996 after graduating from the United States Merchant Marine Academy at Kings Point, New York.  Following graduation from the Basic Officer Course, Infantry Officer Course and Sniper Employment Course, he reported to 3d Battalion, 4th Marines, 1st Marine Division in Camp Pendleton, California where he served as a Rifle Platoon Commander, Weapons Platoon Commander, 81mm Mortar Platoon Commander and Weapons Company Executive Officer.  He deployed twice with the Thundering Third.
In March 2000, Colonel Coyne reported to Company C, 1st Battalion, 23d Marines, 4th Marine Division in Corpus Christi, Texas for duty as Inspector-Instructor.  In July 2002 he was assigned to Weapons Company, 1st Battalion, 25th Marines, 4th Marine Division in Ayer, Massachusetts.  Following his Inspector-Instructor tour, Colonel Coyne attended the Expeditionary Warfare School in Quantico, Virginia, graduating in May 2004.
Colonel Coyne reported to 1st Battalion, 1st Marines, 1st Marine Division in Camp Pendleton, California in May 2004.  He served briefly as the Commanding Officer of Headquarters and Service Company before being assigned as the Commanding Officer of Company C.  During this period, he deployed as the helicopter raid force with the 15th Marine Expeditionary Unit and participated in OPERATION UNIFIED ASSISTANCE and OPERATION IRAQI FREEDOM III.  Upon return from this deployment, Colonel Coyne was assigned as the battalion’s Operations Officer and deployed to Iraq in support of OPERATION IRAQI FREEDOM 05-07.1.
In April 2007, Colonel Coyne reported for duty to command the Regulators of Recruiting Station Sacramento, California.  In July 2010, following this recruiting tour, he attended the College of Naval Command and Staff at the United States Naval War College in Newport, Rhode Island.  After graduating in 2011, he reported to United States Special Operations Command in Tampa, Florida.  During this joint tour, he served as a Strategic Planner, Operations Officer, and as the Executive Officer to the Chief of Staff. 
From May 2014 to May 2016, Colonel Coyne commanded the Island Warriors of 2d Battalion, 3d Marines, 3d Marine Division, where he deployed to the pacific.  Following this tour, Colonel Coyne completed one-year fellowship at Harvard University, serving as a National Security Fellow at the John F. Kennedy School of Government.
In July 2017, Colonel Coyne reported to Headquarters, United States Marine Corps, serving first at Total Force Structure Division within Combat Development and Integration Command, then at the Joint Staff Branch within Plans, Policies, and Operations.  Colonel Coyne recently reported to 2d Marine Regiment, 2d Marine Division, for duty as Commanding Officer of the Tarawa Regiment.
