Commanding Officer, 2d Marine Regiment Colonel Steven M. Sutey

Colonel Steven M. Sutey is a career infantryman who began his service as an assaultman with 3rd Battalion, 25th Marines.  Commissioned in 1998 through the Platoon Leaders Course, he has since served as a platoon commander with 3rd Battalion, 1st Marines; a company commander and operations officer with 2d Light Armored Reconnaissance Battalion; and commanding officer of 1st Battalion, 1st Marines.

 

His service with the Fleet Marine Forces involved leading Marines and Sailors during amphibious and expeditionary operations to include: crisis and contingency operations with the 13th and 11th Marine Expeditionary Units (Special Operations Capable); ground combat in Iraq with Regimental Combat Team 1; counterinsurgency operations in Iraq with Regimental Combat Teams 5 and 7; combat and counterinsurgency operations in Afghanistan with 2nd Marine Expeditionary Brigade; and partnering with the Australian Army 1st Brigade as the commander of Marine Rotational Force—Darwin.

 

Colonel Sutey has also mentored midshipmen and taught military history at the University of North Carolina and Duke University, led platoons at Officer Candidate School, developed service strategy at Headquarters Marine Corps, and authored military strategy and global war plans while serving with the Joint Staff Directorate for Strategy, Plans, and Policy (J-5).  His most recent assignment was as the Commandant’s Senior Military Fellow at the Center for a New American Security, a Washington, D.C. bipartisan policy institute.  
 

A native of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, Colonel Sutey graduated from La Roche College and earned masters’ degrees from North Carolina State University, the Marine Corps University School of Advanced Warfighting, and the National Defense University Dwight D. Eisenhower School for National Security and Resource Strategy.  He is also a Massachusetts Institute of Technology Seminar XXI Fellow.    
 

Colonel Sutey is proud to return to the “Follow Me!” Division and honored to serve in the Tarawa Regiment.
