Commanding Officer, 2d Marines
Colonel John J. Roma

Colonel Roma was commissioned a Second Lieutenant on May 18, 2000 after graduating from Babson College with a Bachelor of Science degree Cum Laude in Business Administration. His formal military education includes The Basic School, the Infantry Officers Course, the light Armored Reconnaissance Leaders Course, the Expeditionary Warfare School, the USMC Command and Staff College (Non-Resident) program, the USMC School of Advanced Warfighting, and the National War College.

From 2001 to 2004, Col Roma served as a Platoon Commander and Company Executive Officer / Fire Support Team leader with Company C, 2d Light Armored Reconnaissance Battalion. During this period, he deployed in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom I as a member of Regimental Combat Team 2, Task Force Tarawa, operating throughout southern Iraq and primarily in the city of An Nasiriyah.

From 2004 to 2006 Col Roma was assigned to Training Command and served as the Officer in Charge of the Light Armored Vehicle Crewman Course  and the Light Armored Reconnaissance Leader Course aboard the School of Infantry-West. Following this tour, he deployed to Afghanistan in support of Operation Enduring Freedom and served as the Senior Company Advisor to First Company, Commando Kandak, 201st Corps, Afghan National Army, operating primarily in the Korengal Valley.

From 2007 to 2008 Col Roma attended the Expeditionary Warfare School before assuming duties as the Commanding Officer of Company K, 3d Battalion, 9th Marines. In 2009 Col Roma again deployed to Iraq in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom 9.2 where his company had primary responsibility for the city of Hit. Upon return from Iraq, Col Roma deployed  to the Republic of Georgia for duties as an advisor / trainer to the Georgian Army in support of the Georgia Deployment Program-ISAF.

Upon return from the Republic of Georgia, Col Roma relinquished command of Company K and assumed duties as the Operation Officer for 3d Battalion, 9th Marines. In March of 2010 Col Roma received orders to 2d Battalion, 9th Marines and again deployed to Afghanistan as the Advisor Team Officer in Charge for 2d Kandak, 2d Brigade, 215th Corps, Afghan National Army, operating primarily in the city of Marjah.

From 2011 to 2014 Col Roma assumed duties as the Inspector-Instructor for Company B, 1st Battalion, 25th Marines. Following this tour, he was selected to attend the School of Advanced Warfighting and was subsequently assigned to the 1st Marine Division Headquarters as the Division Plans Officer. From 2017 to 2018 Col Roma was reassigned as the Regimental Operations Officer for 1st Marines and deployed in support of the Special Purpose Marine Air Ground Task Force – Crisis Response – Central Command (SPMAGTF-CR-CC) 17.2 rotation, operating throughout the U.S. Central Command Area of Responsibility with focus on crisis response and combat operations in Iraq, Afghanistan, and Syria.

Upon return from deployment, Col Roma resumed duties as the 1st Marine Division Plans Officer before assuming command of 3rd Battalion, 1st Marines from April 2019 until June 2021. During this period Col Roma deployed 3/1 to both the Southwest border in support of the SPMAGTF-CR-CC 20.2 and 21.1 rotation.

Upon relinquished command of 3rd Battalion, 1st Marines, Col Roma attended the National War College before assuming duties as the II MEF AC/S G-5/9.
