Commanding Officer, 2nd Battalion, 8th Marines
Lieutenant Colonel Jonathan W. Landers

    A native of Fairfax, Virginia, Lieutenant Colonel (LtCol) Landers graduated from the United States Naval Academy and commissioned into the United States Marine Corps in 2004. After completing The Basic School and Infantry Officer’s Course, he reported to 2d Battalion, 2d Marines. Initially assigned to Easy Company, LtCol Landers served as Platoon Commander and Company Executive Officer and executed two deployments; one to Zaidon, Iraq and one as the Heliborne Company for the 26th Marine Expeditionary Unit (MEU). Upon completion of the 26th MEU, he was reassigned to Headquarters & Service Company and deployed again to Iraq as the Battalion Assistant Operations Officer.

    In January 2009, LtCol Landers reported to 3d Recruit Training Battalion, Marine Corps Recruit Depot Parris Island.  Aboard the Depot, he served as a Series Commander, Company Commander and Battalion Operations Officer.  In September 2012, he transferred to the Maneuver Captains Career Course in Fort Benning, Georgia where he graduated on the Commandant’s List.

    In March 2012, LtCol Landers assumed command of Weapons Company, 3d Battalion, 5th Marines and deployed with the 15th MEU to the CENTCOM Area of Responsibility. Upon completion of that deployment, he assumed command of the Headquarters Company, 5th Marines and trained the company for the inaugural deployment of the Special Purpose Marine Air Ground Task Force Central Command (SP-MAGTF-CENT). In December 2014, he was reassigned as the Operations Officer, 1st Battalion, 5th Marines and completed a deployment to Okinawa, Japan as part of the 31st MEU.

    From June 2016 to June 2019, LtCol Landers served as the Commanding Officer, Recruiting Station Nashville, Tennessee. Following successful completion of this tour, he reported to Marine Corps Command and Staff College in Quantico, Virginia.  In July 2020, he reported for duty as the Operations Officer, 1st Marine Corps District.

    Lieutenant Colonel Landers holds a Bachelor of Science in Systems Engineering from the United States Naval Academy, and a Master of Military Studies from Marine Corps University. His personal awards include the Meritorious Service Medal with two gold stars, Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal with two gold stars, Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal, and the Combat Action Ribbon. He is married and has four children.
