Commanding Officer, 3rd Battalion, 2nd Marines
Lieutenant Colonel John F. Campbell

Lieutenant Colonel Campbell is a native of Denton, MD. He commissioned in 2002 upon graduation from the U.S. Naval Academy. Following a post-graduate year at the University of California, Berkeley and the Basic and Infantry Officer Course in Quantico, Virginia, he reported to 3d Battalion, 5th Marines (3/5), camp Pendleton, California in April of 2004.

Lieutenant Colonel Campbell served as a Rifle Platoon Commander in Company I, 3/5 and deployed to Iraq in September 2004 in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom II. Lieutenant Colonel Campbell assumed duties as Executive Officer for Company I in March 2005 and redeployed with the company to camp Pendleton in April. He was assigned to 3/5’s Military Transition Team (MTT) in October 2005, and deployed with the MTT in January 2006. While deployed, he served as a company advisor to the 1st Battalion, 3rd Brigade, 1st Division (Iraqi Army) in the vicinity of Habbaniyah, Iraq. The MTT returned to Camp Pendleton in August of 2006.

Lieutenant Colonel Campbell reported to 1st Battalion, 8th Marines (1/8) in Camp Lejeune, North Carolina for duty as a Rifle Company Commander in May 2010. He deployed as the Bravo Company Commander to Musa Qala District, Helmand Providence, Afghanistan from September 2010to April 2011 in support of Operation Enduring Freedom. Lieutenant Colonel Campbell briefly commanded Weapons Company, 1/8 before being assigned as the Battalion Operations Officer in June 2011. He deployed with the battalion to Kajaki District, Helmand Province in January 2012. Upon return to Camp Lejeune, Lieutenant Colonel Campbell assumed duties as the Battalion Executive Officer.

Lieutenant Colonel Campbell served as the Commanding Officer, Recruiting Station New Jersey from June 2013 to June 2016. Following successful completion of his tour, he attended the Marine Corps Command and Staff College in Quantico, Virginia. He completed a follow on year as a student at the School of Advanced Warfighting, and reported to U.S. Marine Corps Forces Europe and Africa in Stuttgart, Germany for duty as a planner after graduation. L Lieutenant Colonel Campbell served as the Plans Branch Head for the majority of his time with Marine Forces Europe and Africa.

Lieutenant Colonel Campbell then moved to San Diego, California, serving as the Twelfth Marine Corps Districts’ Operations Officer for a year, before reporting to 3d Battalion, 2d Marines in October 2022 for duty as the Commanding Officer.

Lieutenant Colonel Campbell holds a Bachelor’s of Science in Naval Architecture from the U.S. Naval Academy, a Master’s of Science in Ocean Engineering from the University of California, Berkeley, and a masters in Military Studies and Operational Studies from Marine Corps University.
